How are Ban Thach sedge mats produced?
To get a pair of mats as desired or according to the special requests of
customers, the artisans at sedge mats must go through exactly 4 stages to create
a satisfactory product.
Step 1: Harvest and dry the sedge
- Pick sedge in the field and carry it home.
- Carefully split the sedge into small fibers.
- Put it out in the hot sun for 5 consecutive days.
(Note to dry so that the sedge fibers do not get too dry)
Step 2: Dyeing the Sedge
After drying, dye the sedge: green, red, purple, yellow... (to dye the color
accurately, not easily fading, you have to dip each small bunch, you can dip 2-3
times or more depending on the color intensity).
After dyeing, dry the sedge in moderate sunlight (not too strong sunlight - easy
to become brittle, too mild sunlight - easy to get moldy). Unjointed, durable
sedge fibers will produce a smooth mat.
Step 3: Weaving Sedge
To weave a mat, you need to make a loom, prepare a shuttle, and have two people
work. The first person holds the loom, the second person holds the shuttle, and
depending on the pattern, the weaver will control the embossed yin-yang loom,
single or double loom as appropriate.
Step 4: Finished product
Once woven, the mat is trimmed and trimmed to prevent it from unraveling, then
dried in the sun.
